HOMEProgram Summary

Program Name:
Osaka University Fellowship Program:
Super Hierarchical Materials Science Program
Implementing Organization:
Osaka University
Term:
From March 2021 through March 2028
Background and Objectives
Materials science has brought about various conveniences that we enjoy today, and created new industries, through the discovery of new materials and the creation of new domains that contribute to the development of natural sciences and industrial fields. Osaka University has graduate schools for both science and engineering fields, which serve as the driving force for materials science, as well as for the field of engineering science, which aims to integrate science and engineering. By leveraging this characteristic of the university, this program provides interdisciplinary education with an emphasis on the development of new fields. To this end, the program incorporates a wide range of disciplines under the concept of Super Hierarchical Materials Science, transcending not only the border between physics and chemistry, but also hierarchies that encompass vast areas, from elementary particle physics through hydrodynamics, which can cover even the cosmos, and utilizing a broad variety of theoretical, experimental, and data science methods. With the support of the program, selected outstanding students — fewer than 10% of the enrollees — work hard together in a friendly rivalry in a variety of groups, and acquire the ability to communicate closely with researchers in different fields and other members of the general public, as well as the ability to see things from a comprehensive point of view. This will serve to produce leading talent, able to create innovation while working actively across the sectors of industry, academia, and government. In addition to education, the program aims to develop diverse career path options through collaboration with internal departments and external businesses and institutions. This initiative, in accordance with Osaka University’s objectives, strengthens the university-wide development of venues to foster doctoral talent with advanced research competency, able to tackle the challenges of increasingly complex social issues.

Program Specifications

General Description

We select highly determined, excellent doctoral students who understand the purpose of this program, and provide financial support and various services in cooperation with external organizations, through which we develop talent that will play leading roles in next-generation innovations, and establish clear career paths through collaboration within the university and with external organizations.

Fellowship (Financial Support)

Number of students eligible for the fellowship: 20 for each enrollment year
Amount granted per student (breakdown): ¥2,500,000 per year (¥2,040,000 research support grant, ¥460,000 research expenses)

Operations

  • Under the support of the Education and Student Support Division International Co-Creation Graduate School Support Office, the program is operated by the Interactive Materials Science Cadet Program (hereafter, the “Cadet Program”) of the Institute for Transdisciplinary Graduate Degree Programs, in collaboration with the Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (hereafter, the “Honors Program”).
  • Faculty members involved in materials science from the Graduate School of Engineering Science, the Graduate School of Science, the Graduate School of Engineering, and the affiliated research institutes all participate in training the next generation of leaders.
  • Research capabilities will be strengthened through courses and initiatives offered by the Cadet Program and the Honors Program, and career paths will be secured through collaboration with businesses and external institutions.

Eligibility

  • Support is provided to doctoral students who belong to the Graduate School of Engineering Science, the Graduate School of Science, or the Graduate School of Engineering, and who have been selected for a Materials Science Research Unit of the Cadet Program or the Honors Program.

Aims of the New Fellowship

Targeting Cadet Program students and Honors Program students who are deemed to be excellent students learning materials science, doctoral level education is to be modified to help these students acquire higher perspectives of Super Hierarchy, in addition to conventional approaches.

The program incorporates a wide range of disciplines under the concept of Super Hierarchical Materials Science, transcending not only the border between physics and chemistry, but also hierarchies that encompass vast areas, from elementary particle physics through hydrodynamics, which can cover even the cosmos, and utilizing a broad variety of theoretical, experimental, and data science methods. By letting selected outstanding students work hard together in friendly rivalry in a variety of groups, the program cultivates the ability to communicate closely with researchers in different fields and other members of the general public, as well as the ability to see things from a comprehensive point of view.
