Eligibility for Application

Individuals who are eligible to apply for this fellowship program are those who enrolled in a doctoral program at any of the Osaka University graduate schools in April of 2021 or October of 2020, and who meet all of the following conditions.

  1. Among the individuals who have passed the second round of the 2021 academic year screening examination for the Osaka University Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit) and will start taking the program: those who enrolled in a doctoral program in April of 2021 or October of 2020, and who are in their first year of the program as of April 1, 2021※1
  2. Individuals who enrolled in any of the following doctoral programs in April of 2021 or October of 2020, and who are in their first year of the program as of April 1, 2021
    Graduate School of Engineering Science: Department of Materials Engineering Science, Department of Mechanical Science and Bioengineering, Department of Systems Innovation
    Graduate School of Science: Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Macromolecular Science, Department of Earth and Space Science
    Graduate School of Engineering: Division of Biotechnology; Division of Applied Chemistry; Division of Precision Engineering and Applied Physics; Division of Mechanical Engineering; Division of Materials and Manufacturing Science; Division of Electrical, Electronic and Infocommunications Engineering; Division of Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering; Division of Global Architecture; Department of Management of Industry and Technology
  3. Individuals who are under 30 years of age as of April 1, 2021; however, individuals who fall under any of the following conditions are not eligible to apply:
    1. Individuals who are deemed to be working adults※2
    2. Individuals who are employed under the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Research Fellowship for Young Scientists program (DC)
    3. Individuals who are receiving scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization
    4. Individuals who are receiving the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship as government-sponsored foreign students
    5. International students who are receiving scholarships from foreign governments or other organizations
    6. (6) Individuals who are receiving scholarships or other financial aid based on programs implemented by Osaka University, including those under the Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education (WISE Program), the Program for Leading Graduate Schools, and the Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics※3
      However, this restriction does not apply for financial aid provided as support for tuition fees.

※1 As an exception, for individuals who have applied for the second round of the 2021 academic year screening examination for the Osaka University Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit) to start taking the program during the 2021 academic year, applications will be accepted even if the results of the screening examination have not yet been determined. In this case, these individuals will be required to submit copies of their permits for taking the Osaka University Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit) after their status as fellowship recipients has been confirmed.

※2 “Working adults” herein refers, as defined for the Basic School Survey conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, to: 1) individuals who are in employment (individuals who are currently employed in a job that provides a steady income as salary, wages, fees, or other form); 2) individuals who have already retired from a job that provides steady income as salary, wages, fees, or other form; and 3) homemakers. However, with regard to 3), such individuals may not be deemed as working adults depending on their actual living conditions, and therefore may be deemed eligible to apply.

※3 Even individuals who are receiving the scholarships or other financial aid indicated in (6) above will be eligible to apply, provided that such individuals will have stopped receiving said scholarships or other financial aid before the fellowship payment begins. In this event, the amount of the research support grant will be reduced by an amount equivalent to the portion of the scholarship or other financial aid to be paid during the academic year in which the fellowship payment begins.

Note: It is not possible to apply for other fellowship programs at the same time.

Number of Recipients

Approx. 15
(Approx. 20 individuals in total, including special recommendation recipients and applicants for the second round for the Materials Science Research Unit, are planned to be selected.)

• If changing your laboratory affiliation (academic advisor) upon entering the doctoral program, use Forms 4-1 and 4-2 instead of Form 4 of the Application Documents for the Super Hierarchical Materials Science Program, for the Second Round Successful Applicants for the Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit).

• To apply for the Super Hierarchical Materials Science Program, for the Second Round Successful Applicants for the Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit), it is also necessary to apply for the Honors Program for Graduate Schools in Science, Engineering and Informatics (Materials Science Research Unit) for the Second Round for First-Year Doctoral Students.
