Four students took part in a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshop to explore issues related to Chemistry and Society.

We built models and shared ideas to answer the questions:

• Why does the world need chemists?
• What is one contribution that chemistry has made to society that we could not live without?
• How can chemistry make the world better in the future?

We made lots of great connections, and we learned a lot about everyone’s research interests, and views of how chemistry makes the world a better place. The future is bright with these great thinkers and scientists in the Lab.

We built models that showed some of the contributions chemistry has made to society, they included:

• agriculture
• working with natural resources and energy
• medicine
• manufacturing in general, and rubber tires in particular

A shared model showing chemistry’s contributions to society (middle shared model on the grey plate) is connected to models of ideas for how chemistry can make the world a better place in the future.

This LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) workshop gave students a chance to use the LSP method for the first time. Over the course of the three-hour workshop, students built a number of models to answers questions posed by the facilitator. The students then shared and reflected on their models. The ideas students shared helped us get a deeper understanding of how chemistry contributes to society. Students built individual models, a shared model, and then made connections among each other’s models (ideas). It was a pleasure to work with such creative, talented students.
